LC 2+1 Sp -- 2 Port Serial and 1 Port Parallel Multiplexor

MAGMA

The MAGMA 2+1 Sp is a SBus expansion boardthat combines two high speed asynchronous serial ports with full modemcontrol and one "Centronics" parallel port. The serial ports can be used toconnect to ISDN Terminal Adapters, modems, terminals or any other RS-232device. The parallel port can be used to connect to high speed printers orplotters. It is fully compatible with Sun Microsystem's SPARC computersand other computers compliant with SPARC International SBusspecifications.

Serial Port Hardware:

The MAGMA 2+1 Sp isa single width SBus board based on the Cirrus Logic CD- 1400 Serial/ParallelAsynchronous Communications Engine, a RISC I/O processor capable ofcontrolling both serial ports. The CD-1400 has many advanced features whichminimize CPU overhead, the most important include:

Each port'stransmitter and receiver has it's own 12 byte FIFO buffer which minimizesthe number of interrupts the CPU must service.

Flow control is handledautomatically by the CD-1400, without intervention by the CPU.

SeveralMAGMA Sp boards can be configured in a system. The driver is optimized toreduce CPU utilization and treats all of the MAGMA Sp boards in the systemas a single device. Multiple segh the driver. can be handled in a singlepass through the driver.

Parallel Port Hardware:

Theparallel port is based on the Cirrus Logic CD-1190, an Intelligent Printerand Scanner Interface Controller. It consists of a RISC processor whichcontrols the parallel interface and a 128 byte FIFO buffer which serves asthe interface to the SBus. Interrupts occur only when all of the data in theFIFO has been transferred, thereby minimizing CPU overhead.

The MAGMA2+1 Sp can transfer data at rates up to 250,000 characters persecond.

Software:

The MAGMA 2+1 Sp device driver isdesigned to take advantage of the board's high speed serial and parallelcapabilities. The driver is compatible with Solaris 2.x and SunOS 4.1+ andsupports all features of both systems. It is delivered on a 3.5" disketteand features "plug and play" installation.
